by | Feb 4, 2021 | Latest

COVID-19’s ravages continue to affect daily lives, health care and the economy, but the pandemic has revealed one silver lining – its effect on crime and crashes, at least in Murphy.

The city’s calls for service, arrests and certain crimes took a nosedive in 2020. Vehicle crashes dropped significantly from 422 in 2019 to 281 in 2020 – a 33 percent decline. Traffic stops also fell from 3,970 in 2019 to 2,784 to 2020 – a 30 percent dip.

Murphy police Chief Arthur Cotten said the pandemic’s presence seems to explain why many crimes and auto-related incidents have declined, as fewer people were out and about.
