Wylie ISD trustees opened last week’s regular meeting with public comments centered on a controversy involving the distribution of religious materials at Wylie East High School.
According to the district, women affiliated with the organization Why Islam, along with members of the campus Muslim Student Association, handed out scarves, hijabs, branded tote bags, candy and copies of the Quran during a Feb. 2 event recognizing World Hijab Day.
The items were not reviewed or approved in advance, and district policy prohibits the distribution of religious materials to students, regardless of the group or message. Administrators described the incident as a violation of board policy.
