Murphy to discontinue Flock cameras

by | Oct 6, 2026 | Area News, Latest

The Murphy City Council has decided there are too many uncertainties about Flock Safety automated license plate readers (ALPRs) to continue using them.
Following a presentation by Police Chief Jeff Gibson at council’s regular meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 6, members opted to give Flock 30 days’ notice that the city wanted the company to remove its four cameras.
Gibson said Flock would remove them on the company’s own schedule and the cameras would remain active until their removal.
Councilmembers expressed concern there were no national or state regulations regarding ALPRs and it was not certain the city would receive reimbursement for their lease under a state grant program paused by Gov. Greg Abbott.
In other business, council agreed to delay rebidding of a contract for the FM 544 pedestrian bridge over Maxwell Creek, pending discussion of the project next year.
