New superintendent, bond approved for PISD in 2022

2022 Year in Review – Plano ISD and Wylie ISD

Looking back at 2022, Plano ISD joined the ranks of multiple North Texas school districts looking for a new superintendent.

Sara Bonser, PISD superintendent, announced her retirement Jan. 25, 2022 after 33 years in public education.

Bonser, who had been with PISD for 25 years, informed the board of trustees of her plans to retire at the end of the school year to spend more time with her family.

The PISD board of trustees held an emergency meeting to accept Bonser’s resignation and determine the best course of action to find her replacement.

PISD School Board President David Stolle said the board had two options to replace the superintendent, an internal search or an external one. The board voted to approve an internal search to replace Bonser.

The board selected Theresa Williams, Plano ISD’s Deputy Superintendent and Chief Operating Officer, to fill the top spot. Williams was unanimously appointed in March 2022, beginning her tenure on June 1, 2022.

In August, Plano ISD trustees voted unanimously to include a Voter Approval Tax Rate Election (VATRE) and a Bond Election on the November 8 ballot, saying it’s been more than six years since PISD held a bond election to address a major facility.

In November, voters approved most of PISD’s approximate $1.5 billion bond referendum. The Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election (VATRE), Proposition A, was also approved and will add an additional $9 million annually to the operating budget. The passing of bond Propositions B and C represent around $1.35 million of the total proposed bond package of nearly $1.5 billion.
