Masks to be required at Plano schools, other settings

by | Aug 23, 2021 | Latest

The Plano ISD Board of Trustees at an emergency meeting Monday approved a measure to temporarily require indoor masking at all Plano ISD schools, facilities and district-provided transportation, with the measure to be effective Thursday, district officials stated in a news release.

This temporary measure will be effective through Sept. 24, or until there is further guidance on Gov. Greg Abbott’s executive order as a result of ongoing state and federal litigation or legislative action. A mask exemption form is available through the district for families who want to submit a medical, religious or philosophical exception for their child. This form is live Monday evening and will remain open until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.

“All students, teachers, staff members and visitors, including parents and volunteers, will be required to wear masks indoors at all district facilities and on school buses,” officials said in the release. “Students and staff have the option to remove their masks while seated during meals and while outdoors. Specifically for athletics, performing arts and physical education, masks will be worn consistently except when the mask inhibits a student’s full participation in the activity.”

Plano ISD will continue to monitor trends and consult with Collin County Health Care Services and the Texas Education Agency. Any changes or updates to health protocols will be communicated to families across district communications channels, and the Return to School Plan on the district website — pisd.edu/— will be updated as needed. As an added resource, the district launched a COVID-19 dashboard last week.
