The Murphy Police Department has won council approval to continue the use of license plate readers to fight crime in the city.
Councilmembers voted unanimously at the Tuesday, May 5, meeting to seek a state grant for Fiscal Year 2027 to fund the Flock Safety cameras currently in use.
Police Chief Jeff Gibson said the grant would be from the Senate Bill 224 program created to prevent catalytic converter thefts.
The council meeting began with Mayor Scott Bradley issuing proclamations to recognize National Police Week from May 10 through May 16 and National Public Works Week from May 15 through May 21.
Council also authorized a $349,307 construction contract for sidewalk replacement and repair.
