Work has begun on the Murphy Veterans Tribute (MVT) across from City Hall.
“Wow, all of us have been looking forward to this day for many, many years,” Mary Pat Elledge, MVT board president, said at the Monday, Feb. 9, groundbreaking. “I’m overwhelmed today.”
The project began in August 2017 when the city donated a wooded area next to the amphitheater in Central Park. But the city suggested a new spot when the project stalled after eight years of planning and fundraising.
The new location is a grassy boulevard island farthest east from the flagpoles in front of City Hall.
“This has been a long time in the making, and I think I can speak for everyone when I say we are so excited with it finally coming to fruition,” said City Manager Aretha Adams. “We’re here to break ground on folks who have sacrificed so much; their families have sacrificed so much to serve.”
