A Murphy family poses with Comet the reindeer at the city’s annual Christmas in the Park festival, Saturday, Dec. 6, in the City Hall Complex.
Wintry weather forced the cancelation of last year’s Christmas in the Park, but conditions were perfect for this year’s event – temperatures brisk enough to remind you it was December but no precipitation to interfere with the fun.
“Christmas in the Park is one of Murphy’s most cherished traditions, and this year was no exception,” said City Manager Aretha Adams. “It was a joy to see families, neighbors, and friends come together to celebrate the season.”
Visitors to the City Hall complex Saturday, Dec. 6, were greeted by cheerful campfires and all the makings for s’mores.
The longest lines were to swish downhill on the Mr. Cool snow luge. But Comet the reindeer also drew a crowd waiting to pose in his red sleigh.
A variety of booths and food trucks offered fare both hot and cold, and there were plenty of opportunities for youngsters to display their artistic skills or prowess at games.
Entertainment included Alma Elegance Violin by Alma Bulibekova and Alex Allen, Man Behind the Sax. DJ Melly Mel was the emcee.
The highlight of the evening came at 5:40 p.m. as Mayor Scott Bradley lighted the Christmas tree after a count-down with help from the audience.
The 30-foot tree, new in 2023, has 32,00 tips, 4,550 color-changing lights and plays four holiday tunes.
After the event, Adams said, “I especially want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our incredible staff and volunteers whose creativity, hard work, and dedication made this event truly magical. Our Events team and Parks and Recreation staff, led by Matt Foster, are the best in the Metroplex! I would also like to thank our wonderful sponsors who are true community partners.”
