Fourteen residents of Murphy have graduated from the Citizens’ Academy, known as Murphy University, a summer program designed to build trust, transparency and engagement between residents and their local government.
Program coordinator Kasaun Goss said at the Tuesday, Sept. 2, City Council meeting that the initiative’s goals are to educate residents on city operations, strengthen community connections and empower participants to become informed leaders and ambassadors.
Also on the agenda, council adopted a new schedule of fees that affect everything from water bills to pet adoptions, park rentals and ambulance rides. The changes were intended to keep up with rising costs and ensure the city recovers the expenses of providing basic services.
One of the biggest impacts for residents will be in water and wastewater bills. Rates will go up by 7.3% for water and 7.6% for sewer in October, with similar increases planned each year through 2030.
