Plano East senior Philip Reed has qualified for the Class 6A state track and field meet.

Reed is now a two-time state qualifier after he earned second place in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.93 seconds at last weekend’s Region I-6A meet, held at the University of Texas at Arlington’s Maverick Stadium.

Reed’s state-qualifying time was of the slimmest margins. He edged Allen junior Jace Johnson by one one-hundredth of a second at the finish line. Johnson finished third overall with a 13.94.

“From my vantage point, I had no idea who took second place,” said Jonathan Bannister, Plano East head coach “The top three hurdlers have been battling all season, so I wasn’t surprised at the finish. Just proud that Philip rose to the occasion and did what he needed to do.”

Reed nearly added a state qualification in the 300-meter hurdles. He came up less than one second short of his goal as he had to settle for third place with a time of 37.4.

“I’m extremely proud of Philip,” Bannister said. “He’s been very disciplined, showing patience and trust in the process.”

The Class 6A state track and field championships is scheduled for Saturday, May 3 from Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
