Texans in Washington have expressed support for legislation that would create unique ZIP codes for two Collin County cities.
A bill passed last month by the U.S. House would have provided Murphy and Fairview with their own postal codes.
However, the measure by Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colorado, was not considered by the Senate before the 118th Congress adjourned.
House Resolution 8753, approved Dec. 11 by voice vote, named 50 locations that would receive a single, unique ZIP code within 270 days of enactment.
Seventeen of the sites are in Colorado and three are in Texas. In addition to Murphy and Fairview, the resolution named the small coastal community of Sargent in Matagorda County.
Murphy Chamber of Commerce Chairman Luke Trahan said the Chamber was “fully supportive” of the idea of a dedicated ZIP for Murphy.
“While a majority of the city has the same ZIP code, the confusion caused by overlapping city limits with the ZIP code is unnecessary,” he said. “This would provide much clarity for delivery services and truly help the city with its identity in Collin County. For my own business, when people search for me, they find it says ‘Plano, TX’ instead of Murphy, which is just an unnecessary confusion.”
