City mourns Betty Sue Spraggins

Former Murphy City Councilmember Betty Sue Spraggins died Wednesday, Dec. 11, in Wylie. She was 91.
A native Texan born in Douglasville, Spraggins was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Joseph “Wayne” Spraggins.
She is survived by her children, Cynthia McCullough of Mount Enterprise, Pam Reeb Berry of Murphy, Jack Reeb of Weatherford; five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, Dec. 17, at Charles W. Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 2925 5th St., Sachse, followed by a funeral in the same location and burial at 2 p.m. in Hillcrest Memorial Park, 7405 W. Northwest Highway, Dallas.
Spraggins served for five years on the city council after a successful career in the restaurant business that included “The Honey Pot” in Farmersville.
“I will miss this spunky lady,” Maggie Whitt posed on social media. “Kind, but direct and to the point. She lived a great life.”
Roxanne Brenner Bogdan wrote, “She will be missed. She gave so much to this city. Her hugs, smiles and spunk will always be remembered.”
Former City Secretary Susie Quinn wrote, “She was so much fun. She loved being on the Murphy City Council. She cared about her family. She will be missed.”
Wayne Spraggins, a Marine who fought in the battle of Iwo Jima, passed away in Murphy in 2020 at the age of 95. He had been a journalist and business owner.
