Time for residents to throw stuff out

by | Oct 3, 2024 | Latest

Large electronics such as this television are one of many types of items Murphy resident can dispose of at the Clean and Green event October 12.

Murphy residents are loading up their cars and trucks for the fall Clean & Green event.

Large recyclables or items that cannot be picked up with normal trash can be dropped off between 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 12, in the City Hall parking lot, 206 N. Murphy Road.

Murphy residents may dump or recycle items for free but must present a valid driver’s license or utility bill as proof of residency. They may make as many drop-offs as needed before noon.

There will be various stations accepting electronic waste, household hazardous waste (HHW) or unwanted items to share with others like shoes, clothing or kitchenware and appliances.

Old computers, hard drives, printers, televisions, stereos, fluorescent tubes, incandescent light bulbs, batteries vacuums, power tools and other machinery.

Refrigerators must be free of any freon and tagged by a plumber that freon was removed.

Household hazardous waste includes pesticides, wet paint, solvents, acids, strong cleaners, paint thinners, fertilizers, floor stripping liquids, weed killing chemicals and similar toxic or otherwise dangerous chemicals.

Special shredding trucks like “Shreddy Krueger” will be on hand to gobble up documents. Cardboard boxes are broken down, flattened and hauled off.

The disposal process goes quickly because no inventory is made as the items are received and residents don’t get a receipt for the donations since they are not being appraised or reused.

There are some things the city does not accept, including tires, guns and ammunition, Styrofoam, medicine and hypodermic needles. But the needles can be collected with normal trash if they are sealed into a sharps container or sturdy jug that is taped shut.

Although the Clean & Green event also does not collect drugs or medications, but a separate drug take-back event will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 26, in the lobby of the Murphy Police Department.
