A 99-year-old Murphy resident was killed Saturday, Aug. 10, in Garland when a city vehicle was in a collision with the minivan in which she was riding, police said.
“At approximately 12:45 pm, Garland police and paramedics responded to a two-vehicle crash in the intersection of Pleasant Valley Road and Firewheel Parkway,” said Lt. Pedro Barineau, the Garland Police Department’s public information officer.
Officers discovered a minivan occupied by two women and a city of Garland vehicle had collided in the intersection. One of the women was taken to the hospital and the other was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
Barineau identified the victim as Bessie Bell of Murphy.
The driver of the Garland city vehicle was not injured, he said.
From witness statements and video from a nearby convenience store, traffic collision investigators determined the minivan was traveling westbound on Pleasant Valley Road while the dump truck was traveling eastbound.
“The minivan failed to yield right-of-way as it turned left onto Firewheel Parkway, in front of the oncoming city vehicle, and was struck on the passenger side,” Barineau said.
The driver of the minivan remained hospitalized, he said Monday, Aug. 12. He added that the investigation remained active.
