Smith bests Egwuekwe for Murphy council

Funeral director W. Scott Smith has been elected to the vacant Place 2 seat on the Murphy City Council previously held by Jennifer Berthiaume, who moved out of state.

According to unofficial returns from Collin County Elections, with 55 of 57 of voting centers reporting in the special election, Smith received 1,291 votes or 54.75% of the 2,358 votes counted.


Planning & Zoning Commissioner Chi Egwuekwe polled 1,067 votes or 45.25%.
Results are not official until ballots are canvassed by the city council.
Smith has owned and operated his own businesses for over 20 years and presided over several domestic and international professional organizations. He is a graduate of Garland High School, attended Richland College and graduated from Dallas Institute of Funeral Service.
Egwuekwe holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from Morehouse College, and an MBA with a concentration in finance from the University of Texas at Arlington. He is vice president of finance and a divisional chief financial officer for a medical technology company.
Before serving on the Planning & Zoning Commission, he was president of the Murphy Municipal Development District and vice president of the Murphy Community Development Corporation.
