After a historic basketball season at Plano East, several of their players were given postseason accolades.
The Panthers finished the season 31-5 overall, losing to eventual state champions Lake Highlands in the area round of the state playoffs. It was the first 30-win season at Plano East in almost 30 years, and they also clinched the share of the District 6-6A championship.
For their effort, the team earned several all-district award winners for the season, led by guard Jordan Mizell. He was named the 6-6A co-MVP, sharing the award with Plano’s Justin McBride. Mizell was an all-district player last season for the Panthers, coming off of a broken leg from the year before. He came up with several key baskets for the Panthers down the stretch of the season, a key cog to their district title run. Mizell was also named to the Region 1-6A all-region team as well.
Along with Mizell, Plano East’s DJ Hall was named the 6-6A newcomer of the year, while head coach Matt Wester was named the 6-6A coach of the year. As a sophomore, Hall, coming off an injury last season, made a significant impact off the bench for the Panthers. He was one of their top scorers, providing an inside post presence for the team in key minutes.
The Panthers also had three first-team all-district members. Starters Isaiah Brewington, Jon Tran and Xavier Miller were named first-team players, with Brewington also named to the all-region team for his efforts as the team’s starting point guard.
Narit Chotikavanic and Corey Upkins were named second-team all-district for the Panthers. Upkins, one of only two seniors and the fifth starter on the roster, was a key part of Plano East’s defense and leadership all season.
Ethan Moss was also named an honorable mention player for the Plano East basketball team. The Panthers will return a bulk of their lineup next season, with just Upkins and Nate Malone the only two seniors on the varsity roster.
