Collin College student and Wylie native Taylor Hankey took home second place in an area music competition.
He competed in the Dallas-Fort Worth Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition in March. It is the world’s largest organization of teachers of singing.
Six other Collin College students also placed, competing in six different vocal divisions.
Hankey won second place in Division 14 for graduate men. Plano resident Michael Martin won first place in that division.
Other Collin College students who placed include Marlei Dismuke (fourth place – freshman women), Karla Silva (fifth place – sophomore women), Diana Balley (fifth place – junior women) and Jacqueline Cuesta (fourth place – senior women).
Top singers from each region will submit videos of their performance for a national screening round. A panel of judges will select students for national auditions at Minnesota’s St. Olaf College in June.
“The NATS experience provides our singers the invaluable experience of learning and preparing an audition for a panel of jurors each semester,” Music Professor Casey L. Carter said. “Through dedicated hours of study and practice, our applied vocal students memorized, polished and performed three to seven new pieces of music each semester and they compete in the regional and area NATS auditions.”
