Murphy City Council last week agreed to ask voters in the May 4 election to reallocate a portion of economic development sales tax proceeds to use for streets maintenance and repairs.
Voters also will elect three members to the city council, as well as picking four members to the Collin College board of trustees. Some Murphy residents, depending on their address, will vote in a Plano Independent School District election to choose four board members.
Filings for the city and school posts opened Jan. 15 and close Friday, Feb. 15. Signups are being taken at city halls and school administration offices.
A half-cent sales tax paid on retail sales and services in Murphy has been going to fund Murphy Development District activities, generating about $1 million per year. In a November 2017 workshop, the city council was presented with a proposal to shift half the sales tax, one-quarter cent, to street maintenance.
