The major crimes rate in Murphy increased last year and Police Chief Arthur Cotten takes the blame for the rise.
“It’s our fault,” Cotten declared. “We have gotten better at convincing people to report thefts.”
The number of thefts increased to 117 during 2018, compared to 91 the year before. That calculates to a 28.57 percent rise.
Cotten pointed out that in addition to getting residents to report crimes, the police department worked more closely with area departments in tracking crimes and sharing information.
