Local students shared their visions for the future at the 2015-’16 North Texas Future City Competition. The competition, a national event for students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, provokes students to ask themselves how can they make the world a better place?

This year’s theme was, ‘Waste Not, Want Not’. Participants took a close look at how cities plan for their waste management systems and how to incorporate those systems into their city’s engineering.

“Each team was required to build a model of a futuristic city they had designed and then present it to the judges in the form of a five minute speech,” local participant Paige Smith said. “My team’s city’s name was ‘Green Haven’ and it was in Hawaii.”

During Paige’s team presentation her group showed off Green Haven’s sleek windmills, wide sidewalks and working gondola system.

Student presentations included their waste management solutions and vision of their future city in a virtual city design. Presentations were done using SimCity™ software. Additionally, presentations included a 1,500-word city description, a scale model of their city and a short presentation. Models were built with recycled materials.

Paige’s team included her brother Evan and friend Sammy Flanagan. Angela and Josh Smith were the teams educator and mentor.
