PLANO — A season filled mostly with frustration and negative moments concluded on a positive one this past Friday, when the Panthers dropped Allen 2-1 in the 2015 regular-season finale.

The victory, coupled with 5-4 win over Lewisville on April 24, allowed East to finish 3-13 in District 6-6A. There was a 10-5 loss to Hebron sandwiched between the Lewisville and Allen victories.

“It’s awesome,” head coach Travis Collins said of the final game. “You win two out of the last three …  and that’s a good springboard going into next year. The kids did a great job.”

The Panthers prevailed Friday thanks to some timely hitting and solid pitching from Daniel Ligon, who stayed on the mound until the top of the seventh, but was removed after giving up a homer that cut East’s lead to 2-1. At that point, Collins noted, Ligon had thrown more than 100 pitches.

Trent Thomas came in and closed the deal for Ligon and his teammates.

“The two games we won we got really good pitching,” Collins said. “That’s the key … We played good defense tonight (against Allen). We didn’t make any errors for the first time in a long time. You do those things and you are going to be in every ball game.”

He added, “They never did (quit) and once we got out of (the playoff picture), we kind of relaxed a little bit and put some good swings on some balls.”
