Members sought for city boards

by | Jun 11, 2019 | Latest

Vacancies were created on the Murphy Parks and Recreation Board and the Planning and Zoning Commission with election of three new members, Ken Oltmann, Jene Butler and Elizabeth Abraham, to the city council earlier this month.

Oltmann and Butler served on the Parks and Recreation Board and Abraham was a member of Planning and Zoning. As members of the city council, they are ineligible to continue serving on the respective board and commission.

Murphy residents interested in any of the openings may apply for the posts by Friday, May 31. Applications will be reviewed for city council interviews in early June and appointment to the two advisory bodies as soon as feasible.

The Parks and Recreation Board acts in an advisory capacity to city staff and city council on all matters pertaining to parks and recreation services. Members provide advice on present and future maintenance, operation, planning, acquisition, development and use policies for city parks and recreation services.

The Board generally meets on the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Murphy City Hall. This Board is also the Tree Preservation Board for the City.

The Planning and Zoning Commission is responsible for reviewing plats, site plans, landscape plans, and zoning requests, and making recommendations to the city council The commission consists of seven qualified taxpaying, Murphy voters, plus two alternates with the same qualifications, appointed by the city council for staggered 2-year terms.

P&Z meets the fourth Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at Murphy City Hall.
