PISD speaks in opposition to Senate finance plan

by | May 23, 2019 | Latest

Plano Independent School District joined schools from across the state last week in expressing their opposition to a new wrinkle in a school finance reform plan under consideration by the 86th Texas Legislature that would cost the Plano district $35 million.

PISD Superintendent Sara Bonser was joined Friday by Richardson ISD Superintendent Jeannie Stone and other area school and business officials at a press conference in Dallas to explain their position.

The issue is an accounting change proposed in the Texas Senate to use current year property values instead of prior year values to calculate payments under the state school financing formula.

Schools point out that use of current year values would cause budgets to be inaccurate because school budgets are adopted in June and property values are not certified until July 25. School budgets would be based on estimates, whereas prior year property values have been certified and are accurate.
