Five Girl Scouts were recognized by Murphy City Council last week with proclamations noting their earning the highest award in Scouting, the Gold Award.
The five, who are members of four different troops, were recognized at the Tuesday, May 7 council meeting.
The Gold Award was established in 1980 but has its roots in the Golden Eagle of Merit given in 1916-19 to recognize girls who make a difference in their communities. Over the years, almost 100 million girls have earned the award or its equivalent.
To earn the Gold Award, a Girl Scout must be at least a freshman in high school, be registered as a Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador, have completed two senior or ambassador journeys, or have earned the Girl Scout Silver Award and completed one journey.
