Three members to join city council

About 10% of Murphy registered voters elected three members to the city council and approved a proposition that shifts a quarter-cent of the Murphy Community Development Corporation sales tax to streets maintenance.

Elections were held Saturday, May 4 for area cities, schools and Collin College.

For Place 1 on the Murphy council, Elizabeth Abraham received 838 votes (70.07 percent) to win election over Doug Davis, 358 votes (29.93 percent. Incumbent Place 2 councilmember Jennifer Berthiaume received 690 votes (61.61 percent) to defeat challenger Gayathri Nagarajan, 430 votes (38.39 percent), and challenger Kenneth Oltmann earned 692 votes (64.79 percent) to defeat incumbent Betty Spraggins, 376 votes (35.21 percent).

In a 3-way contest for Place 6 on the Murphy council, Jene Butler received 560 votes (52.09 percent) to defeat James Otto, 295 votes (27.44 percent), and Andrew Chase, 220 votes (20.47 percent) without a runoff election.
