Murphy City Council overruled the Planning and Zoning Commission with a supermajority vote approving a specific use permit for construction of an ethnic grocery store in Murphy Village off of W. FM 544.

The council met Tuesday, Jan. 16, in regular session. Other business included weighing in on a road project in Wylie, expanding notification requirements for zoning hearings and approving a process for billing customers for water use when meters are broken.

IndoPak Supermarket is proposed as a 17,000 square foot building on 2.352 acres located in Murphy Village behind Christian Brothers Automotive. The business specializes in African, European, Mediterranean and Southeast Asian foods, and operates in six locations throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

The business represents a $3 million investment in Murphy and will provide 30-40 jobs, the council was told.

Director of Community and Economic Development Jared Mayfield reported that P&Z denied the specific use permit with little comment in December.
