Spring was the high point for PESH athletics, at least in terms of team sports, as Cindy Mosteller took over the softball program and promptly guided the Lady Panthers to a Class 6A Region I semifinal appearance. They lost in three games to defending state and eventual 2017 champion Keller.

On paper, the Lady Panthers should be better, as they graduate one player, Malea Dickerson, and return a talented core.

In the fall, PESH’s volleyball team enjoyed one of its best seasons in recent years, going 7-7 in District 6-6A, and they barely missed the postseason.

That didn’t happen to the Panther football team, which again made the playoffs, only to lose again in the first round, this time at Hebron.

Lady Panther basketball earned a playoff spot after going 8-6 in District 6-6A. They opened the playoffs with a stunning 41-39 triumph over Euless Trinity in the bi-district round, but then lost 64-56 to Cedar Hill in the area round.

On the wrestling mat, senior Nathan Rankin, who also was a top cross country competitor, finished sixth at state to finish off a solid grappling career. The season also was the final one for head coach Alan Koebke, who retired after 22 seasons at PESH’s helm.

Another standout was golfer Libby Winans, who made state as a junior and proceeded to fire a 6-over par score during the two-day event in Georgetown.
