Plano East Senior High was well represented during the presentation of the sixth annual Dallas Summer Musicals High School Musical Theatre Awards held in the Music Hall at Fair Park.
They won for Best Ensemble, Choreography and Social Media Impact for their presentation of “In the Heights” this past school year. Carissa Aguila was a recipient of a $5,000 Theatre Major scholarship.
“We were thrilled with the awards, especially since the other schools were so impressive. The choreography was the work of our talented Musical Theatre Director Brian Grunkowski, and student choreographers Mila Tsvetanova, Jadyn Sims, and Dani Trujillo,” PESH Theatre Director Gavin Mundy said. “The entire cast was committed from the outset, which was reflected in both awards. Being recognized as a group has been the best possible way to celebrate a great year.”
Joining Aguila were Poteet’s Lorne Brodie, Grapevine’s Matthew Lavery, Plano’s Yessmeen Monharram and Paris North Lamar’s Taylor White.
PESH, with a record 11 nominations, was nominated for Best Direction, Musical Direction, Scene Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design, Stage Crew/Technical, Ensemble/Chorus and Best Musical.
Individual nominations went to Brian Wright as Benny for Supporting Actor, and Zach Thomas as Usnavi for Leading Actor. Honorable mentions nominations went to Supporting Actress Carissa Aguila as Vanessa, Featured Actor Shahayta Lakhani as Sonny, and Featured Actress Amanda Reynoso as Camila.
