The Murphy City Council has approved a Community Enhancement Grant of $4,290 for 335 feet of black, 48-inch chain link fence along the north side of the Decatur/Maxwell/Murphy Cemetery, the oldest and largest cemetery in Murphy.
The fence is the Eagle Scout project of Luke Turner, Scouts BSA Troop 295, who partnered with the Murphy Historical Society that maintains the cemetery.
The Murphy Community Development Corporation approved the grant at its March 4 meeting even though the grant guidelines set a maximum limit of $2,500 per grant. The guidelines also allow council to authorize higher amounts, which it did at the March 19 meeting.
