The Murphy City Council accepted the resignation of City Manager Mike Castro during a special meeting Friday, Aug. 11. Council voted unanimously following a 17-minute executive session. The open session portion of the meeting lasted less than four minutes.
Mayor Scott Bradley said the executive session was held for “deliberation regarding the appointment, employment, evaluation, reassignment, duties, discipline or dismissal of a public officer or employee” in regard to the city manager’s annual evaluation.
No reason for Castro’s resignation was given and city officials declined comment at the Tuesday night meeting, Aug. 15.
Following the approval of a transition agreement, council appointed Fire Chief Del Albright as acting city manager until an interim city manager is chosen.
In a written statement, Bradley said, “We appreciate Dr. Castro’s seven years of service to the city and his oversight to ensure that Murphy remains a vibrant and welcoming community.”
The city’s official statement said council would discuss the search process at a future regular meeting.
Castro holds a BA in engineering sciences from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served on active duty in the U.S. Army at Fort Hood and overseas. He received a master’s degree in community and regional planning from the University of Texas at Austin and a doctor of philosophy in political science from the University of Houston. Castro is also a certified public manager through Texas State University.
Prior to his appointment as Murphy city manager in 2016, Castro served for 11 years as city manager of Jersey Village. He also served as city manager for Garden Ridge and Stephenville.
