City sets April 8 for annual Clean & Green
If you’ve got stuff to recycle, the city of Murphy will take most of it off your hands.
This year’s first of two Clean & Green events will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 8, at City Hall, 206 N. Murphy Road. The event is free to Murphy residents, although participants must present a valid driver’s license or utility bill as proof of residency.
Various stations along the parking lots drive will accept electronic waste, household hazardous waste (HHW) or unwanted items to share with others.
“Accepting HHW and large electronic devices saves residents from trying to figure out what to do with these items,” said Recreation Specialist Greg Dunn, a member of the Keep Murphy Beautiful program.
Household hazardous waste includes wet paint, solvents, acids, strong cleaners, paint thinners, fertilizers, floor stripping liquids, weed killing chemicals and similar toxic or otherwise dangerous chemicals, Dunn said.
The city will also accept light bulbs, batteries and electronics such as old printers, computers, televisions, monitors and other similar items.
Document shredding will be offered onsite. “In addition, clothing, shoes, kitchen utensils, and other household items that are still usable will be gladly accepted,” Dunn said. Those items will be collected, sorted and shared with organizations that provide assistance to residents in need.
No tires will be accepted at the Clean & Green event and neither will drugs or medical supplies. However, the Murphy Police Department will sponsor a Drug Take Back event Saturday, April 22. All medications, prescription or over the counter, will be accepted without question.
