Drivers who travel up and down North Murphy Rd. may have noticed some new lights.

After the completion of the six-lane road, two pedestrian crosswalks were installed with traffic control light standards, in accordance with Safe Routes to School.

Police Chief Arthur Cotten said that the lights have made it safer for kids to cross the street.

“The safety of the children is of the upmost importance. We want to make sure those kids get to where they’re going as safely as possible,” he said.

The standards can be found near the intersections of Shirehurst Dr. and Windsor Dr.

Cotten said there has been a learning curve with the new lights.

The crosswalks feature clearly marked stripes that point out the proper stopping locations. They operate similarly to a regular crosswalk.
