Boggess Elementary students aren’t taking a side seat anymore when it comes to friends being left out at recess. The school recently implemented the buddy bench, a program that helps empower kids to play together and take an active role in making friends.
The buddy bench came to fruition in 2013 at the hands of Christian, an elementary student from Pennsylvania. Christian had seen a similar idea implemented at a school in Germany and thought it could serve a strong purpose at his school.
After discussions with his principal they purchased a bench and educated students on how it should be used. Local media outlets and some national affiliates eventually took notice and the buddy bench idea spread across the nation.
Now the buddy bench has made its way to Boggess Elementary at the request of several students.
School Counselor Michele Austin said the school’s buddy bench will be available in the next week.
“We plan to meet with students and teachers first to talk about how it should be used,” she said. “We want this to empower our students to use their words and talk to someone first, before taking a seat at the bench.”
