With their playoff hopes on the line, Plano East turned to junior Kellan McWhinnie — and he delivered.

McWhinnie was outstanding on the mound, holding a powerful Allen lineup to just one run on three hits while striking out four over seven strong innings. Unfortunately for the Panthers, the offense couldn’t provide support in a tough 1-0 loss to the Eagles on Wednesday.

The game’s only run came in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single.

Plano East had opportunities late to change the outcome. In the sixth inning, the Panthers put two runners on with two outs after Matthew Hyman drew a walk, but a groundout ended the threat.

They threatened again in the seventh when Xavien Salas singled to right field, putting runners on first and second with two outs. However, another ground ball ended the inning — and the game.

With the loss, Plano East dropped to 7-8 in District 6-6A. Combined with a win by McKinney Boyd, the result officially eliminated the Panthers from playoff contention.

Plano East will look to close out the season on a positive note when it faces Allen at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Naaman Forest High School.
