It wasn’t the rain that forced the cancellation of this year’s Maverick Stampede — it was lightning.
Murphy Middle School PTA was set to hold its second annual Maverick Stampede on Saturday morning, April 18.
The 5K and fun run fundraiser, revived in 2025 after a pause during COVID-19, was canceled after a second lightning delay.
About 83 runners had registered for the event. Plano East JV cheerleaders and other Plano East students were on site to cheer on participants and assist with the course. Sponsors and activities were in place, including breakfast bowls from Credit Union of Texas, raffle prizes, a photo booth and inflatables.
Murphy Middle School student Aditi Chidambaram won the race’s T-shirt design contest. Five student entries were submitted, and her design was selected for this year’s shirt.
The race will not be rescheduled this school year. The PTA has recommended moving next year’s event back to the fall.
A raffle connected to the fundraiser has been extended to continue raising money for PTA programs and student activities. It can be accessed at mmspta.membershiptoolkit.com.
