Plano East junior William Prasetyo qualified for the Class 6A state swimming and diving championships in the boys 200-meter freestyle after he placed second with a personal-best time of 1:41.99 at the Region II-6A meet, held Friday and Saturday at Lewisville ISD Westside Aquatics Center.
“He swims very smart,” head coach Talyna Morgan said. “He didn’t get too excited. He did not go out too fast, but finished strong. He never gives up, which is an important thing.”
Prasetyo just missed out on qualifying for the state meet in the 500 freestyle. He placed third with a 4:45 and was hopeful to be a call-up but his time wasn’t fast enough to make the state cut.
Prasetyo also helped to lead Plano East to seventh place in the 200 freestyle relay and eighth in the 400 freestyle relay. Ben Tran, Paul Chu and Winston Le teamed with Prasetyo in both relays. Chu added a fourth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke and earned 14th in the 100 free, while Le took eighth in the 100 butterfly and 11th in the 200 individual medley.
Abby Wesneski led the charge for the Lady Panthers at the regional meet. She placed seventh in the girls 100 backstroke and teamed with Kaitlyn Vo, Christine Bui and Purbaaz Chahal in the 200 medley relay, with Plano East earning 11th place in the medley relay. Emmy Looney placed seventh in the 1-meter diving and Skylar Garris placed 11th. Malini Mulford swam to 11th place in the 500 freestyle.
