There was standing room only at the Tuesday, Jan. 20, meeting of the Murphy City Council as two dozen citizens spoke against a proposal to build a parking lot at the Islamic Study Center, 1030 N. Murphy Road.
The application by Cordoba Consulting was presented to the Jan. 8 meeting of the Planning & Zoning Commission, which returned the proposal to staff after uncertainty as to whether the center was a place of worship or a study center.
News of the center spread on social media and speakers including Republican gubernatorial candidate Charles Crouch and residents of Fairview and Grayson County came to speak before council.
