Two Plano ISD seniors have been awarded a patent for an application that tracks exposure to ultraviolent (UV) light from the sun and alerts the user based on their personal profile, translating complex dermatological risk factors into an easy-to-use digital tool.

The U.S. Patent Office issued Patent No. US 12,469,600 B2 in November for “UV Exposure Monitoring and Alerts Application” submitted by Shriya Viswanathan and Saura Agarwal.

Shirya attends Plano Senior High and Saura is in the International Baccalaureate program at Plano East Senior High. The pair began working together on a science project at Renner Middle School and applied for a patent in 2023.

The patent application notes UV sunlight is invisible and cannot be assessed based on how bright or hot it is outside. The inventors note 3.3 million Americans suffer from skin cancer, with the leading cause being overexposure to UV light.

“Their dedication, creativity and leadership reflect the best of our district community, and we look forward to seeing how they continue to grow as innovators and problem-solvers,” the district said in a release announcing the patent.
