More displays of professional artwork are planned for public places in Murphy.
City Council commissioned Dallas artist Steven Hunter in 2023 to paint a colorful 20-by-40-foot mural on the south wall of the Murphy Activity Center, and a monument of a kneeling GI holding a rifle and U.S. flag will be the focal point next spring of the Murphy Veterans Tribute in the City Hall complex.
Reagan Rothenberger, director of community and economic development, said city staff recommended two works by sculptor Dale Rogers of Massachusetts, “Wise Owl” and “Sitting Dog.” The owl is 88 inches tall and the dog stands 49 inches tall.
Rogers creates outdoor metal sculpture made from Cor-Ten, steel designed to weather naturally and form a protective rust layer over time.
His work often combines geometric, abstract or figurative forms scaled for public settings with more than 100 sculptures installed on campuses, city parks and private developments.
