College project gets green light

Wylie P&Z unanimously approved the site plan for a major new career and technical education facility at Collin College Wylie campus.

The continued expansion of Collin College’s Wylie campus — a significant educational resource for Murphy and surrounding communities — cleared another hurdle last week after the Wylie Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved the site plan for a major new career and technical education facility.

The proposed 66,309 square-foot building, planned for 7.28 acres at 391 Country Club Road, will house hands-on training programs in welding, HVAC, veterinary technology and additional fields still to be announced. College officials say the new facility is designed to accommodate a growing student population and the region’s increasing demand for workforce-ready graduates. The Wylie campus opened in 2020 and has seen steady enrollment growth as Collin County’s population continues to climb.

According to documents presented to P&Z, the project will be built in two phases, though all 196 required parking spaces — including six ADA spaces — will be in place before the building opens. Phase one includes the main structure and nine parking spaces, with the remainder added in phase two.
