After not being able to make it past the third round of the playoffs in each of the previous two seasons, the third time proved to be the charm for the Plano East volleyball team.

The Lady Panthers continued their playoff journey with a 3-0 sweep (28-26, 25-16, 28-26) of El Paso Eastlake at Lubbock Coronado High School on Friday afternoon.

In the first set, Eastlake forced set point after a kill from one of its middle blockers, but Plano East fought back. Senior Simone Heard had a kill on the ensuing point. Four points later, junior Dakota Huynh posted a service ace to give the Lady Panthers a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five match.

After cruising to a nine-point win in the second set, Plano East struggled in the early portion of the third set. Eastlake took a 14-6 lead, but the Lady Panthers quickly cut into the Lady Falcons’ lead.

Plano East fought off set point and took a 27-26 lead after a Kyla Slaughter block. The Lady Panthers completed the comeback and sweep following a block by sophomore Jaiden Boutte on the ensuing point.

Plano East (31-10) advances to face Byron Nelson in the Region I-6A Division I final, set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hebron High School.
