The fall Clean & Green event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 11, in the parking lot of the city hall complex, 206 N. Murphy Road.

The event coincides with the Fire Department’s open house.

Murphy residents may dump or recycle items for free but must present a valid driver’s license or utility bill as proof of residency. They may make as many drop-offs as needed before noon — but be prepared for a wait since the spring event attracted 500 participants.

Residents are urged to pack their loads in order of dropoff, with hazardous household waste closest to the driver, followed by documents for shredding, electronics, and finally small household items at the very back of the vehicle so they can be unloaded first.

Household hazardous waste includes pesticides, wet paint, solvents, acids, strong cleaners, paint thinners, fertilizers, floor stripping liquids, weed killing chemicals and similar toxic or otherwise dangerous chemicals. Also, batteries and light bulbs, both fluorescent and incandescent.

Electronics includes old computers, hard drives, printers, television and stereos.

Special shredding trucks like “Shreddy Krueger” will be on hand to gobble up documents. Cardboard boxes are broken down, flattened and hauled off.

There are some things the city does not accept, including tires, guns and ammunition, Styrofoam, medicine and hypodermic needles. But the needles can be collected with normal trash if they are sealed into a sharps container or sturdy jug that is securely taped shut

The event also does not collect drugs or medications, but a separate drug take-back event will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 25, in the lobby of the Murphy Police Department.

The next Clean & Green will be in the spring.
