The Plano East boys’ soccer team was eliminated from playoff contention following a 4-3 loss to McKinney from McKinney ISD Stadium on Tuesday.
Senior Logan Potter scored the first two goals for Plano East.
A goal by senior Ben Alexander with two minutes remaining in the first half put the Panthers into a 3-2 lead.
Plano East had chances to increase its lead but came inches short on several chances. The Panthers were awarded a free kick six minutes into the second half. Junior Jordy Rocha attempted to bend the ball inside the post, but it bounced off the top right corner of the crossbar.
It remained a one-goal lead for Plano East until the 68th minute.
The Panthers’ goalkeeper came out of his net to attempt to make a play, but he misplayed the ball and McKinney’s Beckham Sayers took advantage of the miscue. Sayers kicked the ball into an open net for a goal to level the score at 3-3.
The Lions took the lead for good with 8:26 left in regulation. McKinney was awarded a corner kick, and the Lions converted. John Frey went up in the air to redirect a service into the box under the arm of Plano East’s goalkeeper for his third goal of the night as the Lions gained a 4-3 lead.
Plano East (8-7-3, 6-6-3) will conclude its season at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Allen from Tom Kimbrough Stadium.
