Murphy’s first police chief, Fred Garwacki of Frisco, has died at the age of 85, his family said. Garwacki’s daughter, Sharon Ray, said he had been battling health issues for some time and his family was with him when he succumbed on Friday, May 5.
Garwacki and his family moved to Murphy in 1973 and he became town marshal in 1979, patrolling in his father’s station wagon with a staff of part-time officers.
He became police chief in 1980 and served until 2005, when he retired.
The department issued a statement saying Garwacki was “instrumental in the growth of the police department to what it is today.”
A Celebration of Life will be held June 17 at Stonebriar Funeral Home in Frisco.
