Murphy council approves table sponsorship despite trustee’s objections

by | Feb 4, 2021 | Latest

The Murphy City Council approved on Tuesday a table sponsorship of $1,000 for upcoming 2nd Annual Murphy Veterans Tribute Fundraising Dinner and Gala.

Mayor pro tem Jennifer Berthiaume was the dissenting vote in a 6-1 decision. The keynote speaker at the gala, scheduled for March 5 in Parker, is retired Army Lt. Col. Allen West, the chairman of the Republican Party of Texas. Berthiaume said she realized that the gala is not intended to be a politically partisan activity, but she said she wondered whether “it’s appropriate for us to actually allocate city funds, taxpayer funds, for something that could be perceived as partisan.”

Mary Pat Elledge, president of the Murphy Veterans Tribute, said after the meeting she thought West would speak about his time in the military and his background. West has drawn headlines in the past and in recent times for various controversial statements.

Read more about the meeting in the Feb. 11 edition of the Murphy Monitor.
