The Plano East Lady Panthers basketball team, ranked No. 7 by The Dallas Morning News, had one more hurdle to a district championship.
After overcoming the adversaries throughout the year, Plano East celebrated its first girls basketball district championship in 13 years. Their last title came in 2008.
Three games during the week, Plano East had back-to-back games against Marcus and Flower Mound on Jan. 25 and 26, respectively, and came out a perfect two-for-two in the wins. The first, against Marcus, showed East’s dominant ways on both the offensive and defensive ends in a 65-22 win.
Plano East jumped out to a 27-11 first-half advantage and kept their foot on the gas on the way to the easy win. Not only was the defensive intensity high, but four different Lady Panther players also scored in double figures, led by Adabugwu Anamekwe’s 13 points. Tania Amos added 11, while Donavia Hall and Taylor Haggan had 10 points each. The loss put Marcus at 1-11 in district play and 5-16 overall, last in the district.
