If you ever wondered how much 1,376 flags would weigh, Murphy native and Boy Scout, Evan Garcia, has the answer – 72 tons.
About six months ago, Evan decided he would collect American flags and give them a proper retirement ceremony as hi Troop 285 Eagle Scout project. In the end, he was pleasantly surprised at the number of flags he gathered during the two-month collection period.
“I never knew so many people would keep their old flags and not just throw them away as some people do,” the Scout said. “The longer my info was out there about me collecting flags, I was just getting more and more.”
