Welcome new year at Wylie Senior Center

by | Jan 3, 2019 | Life & Style

Happy New Year! We loved celebrating Christmas with friends and family, but we’re excited to get back to the Wylie Senior Recreation Center and kick the new year off with a wide variety of activities and trips.

Here’s a four-week class that’s as new as 2019: Drawing. Meeting Jan. 9, 16, 23, and 30 from 10 a.m. to noon, this class provides step-by-step instruction to help you create stunning drawings and works of art. You’ll uncover talent and finish the course with skills to continue creating on your own. Remember: every great artist was first an amateur. Cost is $65 total for all four classes.

We always love spending an afternoon watching favorite flicks, especially when it’s cold outside. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, it’s The Reelers, with “Charlotte’s Web” and “Dial M for Murder.” Surely everyone remembers the sweet pig named Wilbur and his friendship with barn spider Charlotte, but in case it’s been a while since you’re enjoyed the 1954 classic “Dial M for Murder,” here’s a reminder of the plot. An ex-tennis pro (Ray Milland) wants to have his wealthy wife (Grace Kelly) murdered so he can have her inheritance. He discovers she’s been seeing a man on the sly (Robert Cummings), so he devises the perfect plan to kill her. Blackmail … intrigue … trying to outwit the police … thrills and mysterious chills. If you haven’t joined us for one of these film fests, come on down! It’s absolutely free, and we provide popcorn while you watch and a slice of pizza for lunch in between movies.

Thursday, Jan. 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., catch the bus and head for the British Flying School Museum in Terrell. Celebrate the spirit and honor the sacrifices as we travel to the site of the first and largest World War II flight training school in the United States. Discover how the citizens of Terrell opened their homes to the British Royal Air Force from 1941 to 1945 and how it impacted the war. Cost is $15 and bring money for lunch.

Registration for Winter/Spring is open now, and there is still space in many activities. The sooner you register, the more likely you are to take part in your favorites. Register for classes and activities online or in person. Register for a pass in person only at the center, located at 800 Thomas St. in Wylie. Our phone number is 972-516-6349.

Best wishes for a safe, healthy, and happy 2019 to everyone!
