Murphy utility customers who have been paying their bills automatically by credit card must choose an alternate method of payment by Feb. 15 or risk nonpayment penalties or service interruption.
Customer Service Manager Teresa Thompson reported that, in the interest of security, the utility billing department will destroy credit card numbers it has on file.
She noted that with the proliferation of security breaches involving credit card numbers, the city is choosing to eliminate the transfer of card numbers from customers to staff.
After Feb. 15, customers who pay their utility bills with a credit card must enter the card number into a secure third-party portal, rather than provide the number to the city of Murphy. To start the process, go to murphytx.org/141/Billing-Payments.
