Before adopting any revisions to stormwater utility rates, Murphy City Council asked Director of Public Works Tim Rogers for detailed information on commercial properties and exemptions to fees assessed for stormwater capital projects, maintenance and operations.
The council held a workshop on stormwater utility rates prior to its regular meeting Tuesday, July 3.
Murphy currently assessed a $3 monthly fee on each property parcel with funds dedicated to stormwater operations. The fee generates about $224,000 annually.
Rogers reported that his department is currently studying rates to make sure that they are fair and equitable according to how each property contributes to water runoff during rains.
Stormwater can be defined as precipitation from rains that can soak into the soil, be held on the surface and evaporate, or runoff that ends up in streams, rivers or other bodies of water.
